And so, the grand experiment of a two-party system in the form of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat has failed.

Did anyone not see it coming since mid 2014? I doubt it.

Of course, the internal squabbles of Pakatan members PAS and DAP, both with hard-headed leaders unable to give and take in any form, caused this.

The fact that PKR remained mum for most of it and just let it all fall apart is no surprise either. Yes, I blame all parties involved in Pakatan on this one for two reasons.

One, the entire alliance had no unified leadership or structure. Every single party went ahead with their own organisation and just loosely tied one another as a coalition by dragging one of each party member to their ceramahs or events as a show of unity.

Secondly and subsequently, there was so much vying for power that the alliance could not even decide to have a shadow cabinet. Instead, every single minister had to be shadowed by three separate party MPs because of it.

It gets even worse when the only excuse PKR’s president could give was that there’s no federal funds for it.

Now, the only thing left to do is make the dissolution permanent. You cannot remove yourself from an alliance and still wish to garner the rewards, such as what PAS is trying to do.

It is also definitive cowardice on the part of Nik Aziz Nik Mat’s son, to suddenly ask DAP to “be a man instead of a woman” and fire their members in Penang from administrative posts.

In Selangor, the situation means a need for Mentri Besar Azmin Ali to make the biggest decision in his political career.

He had earlier said that he would prefer to be left out of this childish tiff between the two other parties, but it seems his hand is now forced by PKR itself.

Whatever the announcement by Rafizi Ramli as PKR secretary-general this evening, I firmly believe the people of Selangor should have the final say of whether they support a Pakatan without PAS or otherwise.

As such, I urge Azmin to approach the palace to call a state election for Selangor to determine where the people stand on this matter.

As the most developed state and a population that is tied to the news on perhaps an hourly basis, the people of Selangor have seen the collapse of the Khalid Ibrahim government, the banning of events due to PAS intervention and even the muktamar of the party which saw the progressives walloped by the more conservative faction.

The people of Selangor also see the constant mention of PAS getting together with Umno as a betrayal of their votes, not to mention the continued insistence to implement hudud law.

A code of law that Umno is apparently supporting, I might add.

Let the people of Selangor decide

As such, Azmin must let the people of Selangor decide if they wish PAS representatives to still be their voice in the state assembly, to decide whether or not concerts are a threat to Islam, and whether the continued encroachment of Islamic belief should continue to apply to every single citizen of the state, be it Muslim, Hindu, Christian or even the atheists.

Selangor has always had a diverse population, but one thing that united us in the last two general elections was the need to prove that there was a viable choice in politics.

Now, that viable choice is gone. There will be a sizeable population of the citizenry which voted for PAS just because it was a member of Pakatan. There will also be a sizeable population that voted for DAP because it was teaming up with PAS.

There is no denying it.

So, return this decision back to the people of Selangor. Let us decide who goes and who stays.

There is another reason for this, of course.

It is to avoid the transfer of power through undemocratic means as we saw in Perak before. With PAS insisting on getting chummy with Umno, do not be surprised if it just happens once more.

And quite frankly, PKR has yet to answer for the multiple frog leaps nor won back confidence for such a calamity.

So I urge the state government to push the decision back to the people it holds in such high esteem as they preach in their constant sermons and ceramahs.
