The recent letters by concerned Muslims show that many are concerned about the state of Islam in the world today. On the other hand, I do believe some politicians in the ruling party and many in PAS, a Wahhabi outfit (Wahhabism is fundamentalist and intolerant Islam) are not that bothered. I really feel sad and depressed about the state of Islam in the world today.

We are pious but we are spiritually dead. Hate consumes us. Love is rather a stranger in Islam-dom today. Hypocrisy, extremism, despotism, male tyranny, are truly Muslim problems. It is as good as having Islam dead. Muslims are dead. We all exist only in name today.

The surest sign that Islam is dead and that Muslims are dead is that many non-Muslims perceive Islam as less than loving when compared to the other religions. People even criticise Muhammad (PBUH), the most perfect being who ever lived. Sad, sad, sad.

We should all rebuild our dead civilisation based on the universal human values found in all religions, because these universal human values found in all religions come from Allah and the light of Muhammad and Adam our father. We should all relearn the Quran and Sunnah, as the grandfather of our prime minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, wanted us to.

He was a great Islamic reformer in the tradition of Gamaluddin Al-Afghani, Muhammad Abduh and Rashid Rida, the reformers of Islam in the last century. The reformers wanted Muslims to be reborn in the light of social progress. They wanted Islam-dom to march in tandem with progress, and that was what Muhammad and his disciples always wanted for us.

Not for us to be Westernised, but for us to be modernised. The surest signs of Westernisation - Briton-worshipping, mini-skirts, pro-Israel policies, statues - are sins we should not adopt as Muslims.

Our beloved prime minister is the right man to lead the Muslim world back to life. Let us all give him a hand.
