Research shows that interactions with animals can decrease stress in humans and this was clearly seen when three puppies from the Selangor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) put their paws forward to comfort students preparing for final examinations.

‘No More Ruff Days!’ was an aptly named campaign as the students started smiling and laughing at the antics of the three lively puppies and many were more than willing to pay the nominal fee that allowed them to spend some time with the pups.

Joey and littermates Bolt and Usain are seeking their forever homes and were more than willing to accept the cuddles offered. Helen Chan, fundraising manager of the SPCA, said “Playing with or petting an animal can increase levels of the stress-reducing hormone oxytocin and decrease production of the stress hormone cortisol. With final examinations just around the corner, bringing our fur babies here seemed quite appropriate.”

‘No More Ruff Days!’ was a fund-raising campaign organised by the public relations class of the American Degree Transfer Program of Taylor’s University. Anna Edward, senior lecturer in charge of the class, said: “The students are required to conceptualise a campaign to raise funds for an NGO as part of their curriculum. This year, we chose the SPCA and are proud to announce that we were able to raise RM1,400.”

Every single bit counts, and the money will be well spent on the more than 200 dogs and cats at the SPCA Selangor Centre located in Ampang, Selangor.
