Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Prof Dr Hashim Yaacob says that he is unaware of allegations made by UM academic Edmund Terence Gomez regarding exam marks tampering and favouritism in promotions.

Indirectly, he is implying that Gomez is a liar. Now, the university's own academic staff have come forward to state that the VC is well aware of these allegations. So pray tell me, who is the liar here?

When you have the academic staff of the university exposing in public so gross a travesty by the vice-chancellor, we all know that means that a motion of no confidence has been moved by his subordinates.

That being the case, how does he expect the student population of almost or over 20,000 to give him any regard and respect at all? Simply put, I cannot imagine how he is going to continue to govern and run the university respectfully.

Hashim, I feel, never imagined that UM's academic staff union would call his bluff. It is a wonder why he would think that others in the university - in a position to credibly rebut his lie - would not do so. Did he think so low of his superiors that they would only take his word and not that of Gomez's or the staff union's?

In all that has happened it is proven beyond any doubt that Hashim is unfit to remain as the vice-chancellor of UM. Indeed, so long as he continues to remain in that position, the university is not the place for one to get a real education.
