Let’s not give every issue a racial and religious twist

Referring to the recent issue concerning paint brushes made of pig bristle, the Malaysia Consumers Movement (MCM) commends Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Hamzah Zainuddin for mandating enforcement officers to halt raids as well as seizure of related products. This decision was bold, but certainly apt.

The MCM lauds such leadership premised on respect and responsibility, ultimately re-instilling a culture of upholding harmony as well as racial integration. Let us avoid turning every issue into a racial and religious controversy, which currently appears to be the trend. Enforcement officers must evaluate severity of situation or complaint in the first instance before formulating any action plan. In this case, a notice of compliance would have been most appropriate.

The objectivity in thought- leadership was encouraging, whereby calling enforcement officials to tackle issues at source. Awareness building on product labelling and supply chain management is fundamental. In essence, as rightfully pointed out by the minister, it’s about advocacy and awareness on areas of regulatory and self-compliance.

Ultimately, good product stewardship practices cut across all business aspects. The MCM thus urges suppliers, product manufacturers and traders alike, to helm an equal responsibility in ensuring products are made from approved sources and labelled accordingly, especially when in touches on religious sensitivity. This would also include adhering to approved distribution process, while ensuring the adoption of accurate marketing communication practices.

Similarly, we consumers have a role to play as well. As advised by the minister, let's inculcate a habit of seeking clarification when in doubt. This will help us to better understand products that we use or consume. Suffice to say, the influence of consumers has a far-reaching impact.

Here is a commendation to the minister and we hope to see others acting similarly to uphold harmony for the betterment of us all as one big diverse family.
