I refer to the letter Many more years left in UKM's Ramasamy .

In the world of academia if one is really good, than s/he need not worry whether her/his employment or contract gets extended or renewed. Hence, it is really puzzling to me why so much fuss has been raised about Prof P Ramasamy not getting his employment extended or renewed at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

At the moment, there are so many universities in Malaysia not to mention the world over particularly those where English is the medium of instructions. So, if he is so good as a number of people have claimed him to be, then all he needs to do is "tepuk dada dan tanyalah selera" and regards that as an opportunity to explore new territories. So, instead of crying foul, Ramasamy should just move to another university either locally or abroad.

If serving the country is important to him then pick another university in Malaysia. Otherwise, move to another country of his choice. This is one big advantage of being in the academia. Across the world over, the criteria for judging excellence in performance of an academic are pretty much the same, i.e., teaching, research and publications in refereed mainstream journals in his field, administration, and extension or community service.

Thus, a good academic usually will not have much difficulty securing a teaching job in another university anywhere in the world, particularly if her/his field of expertise is very much in demand.
