The death of Dr Liew Boon Horng has robbed Malaysia of a brilliant future leader. It simply did not make sense.

Liew's horrifying death, crushed by a cement mould which fell from a poorly supervised construction site, could have happened to any one of us. It was just that he was at an awfully wrong place at the wrong time.

Liew's senseless death shows that it takes a horrifying tragedy, which robs us of a precious gem of a man, to adopt a culture of safety in our daily lives. Do we need to lose another like him to wake up from our tidak apa -thy?

I call on the government to impose heavy fines on companies which do not observe a culture of safety at construction sites, because they endanger the lives of innocent bystanders, as the late Dr Liew. Those who caused his death must all be charged for criminal negligence.

I also call on the government, and Malaysian society, to honour Dr Liew accordingly. Not just by remembering his services to the nation, but by dedicating future occupational safety and health policies to his memory.

Condolences to the Liew family. They have lost a loving son/father, and the country is poorer without this great man. May God bless him.
