LETTER | Feedback on suspected scams are acted upon

LETTER | Maybank would like to refer to the article entitled "Banks must be quick to act on scam tip-offs" in Malaysiakini on May 5, 2020, and would like to thank the writer for his feedback, and his initiative in alerting the bank on a possible scam involving an account holder.

We would like to assure the writer that the bank welcomes such feedback and tip-offs, and these would all be immediately investigated, including carrying out monitoring of the accounts closely to ascertain whether there is evidence of scams taking place.

We do require a police report if the person lodging the complaint is a victim of scams and if necessary, we may also lodge a police report on our part.

It is, however, not mandatory for those providing tip-offs to make a police report, although it is encouraged as it would help strengthen the investigations and any submissions to the authorities.

We regret that the writer was informed otherwise and told that a police report was mandatory in his case.

We are thankful for the information provided by members of the public, including the writer, to help prevent fraud and reduce the number of scam cases in Malaysia.

Every feedback is treated seriously but we do hope those providing the tip-off understand that we will be unable to share any details on the investigations owing to confidentiality issues.
