LETTER | Permai a lifeline for those caught between the cracks

LETTER | I recently lost my job due to the economic downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. I was one of those who fell "between the cracks" so to speak. Prior to this, I had just started working not long before the company decided to reduce its headcount.

As the company adopted a last-in-first-out (Lifo) policy, those who had just joined were first to be shown the door. And because I had been in the company for only a short period, my contribution to Socso' Employment Insurance Scheme (EIS) did not meet the minimal requirement. Hence I did not qualify for the lost-of-job aid assistance.

Thank god, the Permai package announced by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin recently had relaxed the ruling. I am now eligible to claim around 30 percent of my previous drawn salary for three months. It may not be a lot for many others, but as I had various financial commitments, including ageing parents to care for, the aid goes a long way to tide me over during this difficult period.

I am also glad that the government has decided to expedite the disbursement of those who had applied for the Employee Provident Fund's (EPF) i-Sinar programme. I did not qualify under i-Sinar's Category 1 and had to apply under its Category 2.

I was bracing for a prolonged approval as unlike Category 1, applicants needed to furnish documentary proof. But luckily, EPF has decided to disburse RM1,000 to all applicants under Category 2. The money certainly came in handy!

I just want to record my appreciation to the government for taking care of those who fell in between the cracks. I have been raised to express gratitude when someone extends a helping hand so that the one who helps will be inspired to continue with the good work. Thank you once again!
