LETTER | Addressing plight of senior citizens

LETTER | I’m writing to express my concerns regarding the ongoing challenges faced by senior citizens in Malaysia, particularly in light of the proposed study by the Transport Ministry to evaluate the necessity of medical assessments for the renewal of driving licenses for senior citizens.

While I recognise the importance of such a measure to ensure road safety, it is vital to approach this issue with sensitivity to avoid disproportionately impacting the mobility and independence of our elders.

As a senior citizen who has spent years contributing to the private sector, I find myself increasingly anxious about the implications this may have on my future autonomy. Moreover, a matter of profound importance is the barrier we encounter in accessing affordable healthcare, exacerbated by insurance companies' refusal to extend healthcare coverage beyond the age of 70.

For those who are eligible, the premiums are often prohibitively high, making it financially straining for those with little or no income.

Without sustainable income and adequate insurance coverage, senior citizens become the most vulnerable segment of our society. It is imperative that we extend our support to this community to ensure their dignity, health, and well-being are safeguarded.

Therefore, I urge the government to implement a nationwide health insurance scheme tailored to the needs and financial capabilities of senior citizens, ensuring that even the most vulnerable among us are protected.

Such an initiative would not only alleviate the burden on seniors and their families but also contribute to a more inclusive and caring society. By recognising and addressing these challenges, Malaysia can set a benchmark in fostering an environment where all generations can thrive and age with dignity.

I trust the government will consider these issues with the urgency and compassion they merit.
