One thing Hindraf has managed to do, regardless of its motives, is bringing attention to the plight and marginalisation of Indians. It has made a valid stand to defend its stand. Its leaders, P Uthayakumar and P Waythamoorthy, have paid dearly for their beliefs and convictions. Their willingness to withstand anything sprung on them is admirable.

But it saddens me that the government has employed deplorable, underhanded tactics to suppress them. The police, especially, seem to be extensive in quelling a would-be peaceful demonstration. Who has questioned the rationale of the police to do this? Ultimately, it isn't motives of Hindraf that we need to question. It is the draconian government's hardline policy in curbing freedom of speech.

Hindraf is entitled to freedom of speech and self-expression as stated by Article 10 of the Federal Constitution. The government has blatantly violated that fundamental right and this is the crux of the matter. The government has been undemocratic and overly paranoid in protecting its interests at the expense of its people. Why hasn't anyone questioned the motives of this despicable bully?
