In wake of A Kugan’s brutal murder, the whole country was awaiting a statement from our ‘esteemed’ Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar.

Instead of promising to get to the bottom of the murder and placating Kugan’s family, he instead vowed to take action against the two deputy ministers who allegedly ‘barged’ into the mortuary that held Kugan’s body.

Shame on you, Syed Hamid. You have once again proved that Umno is a big bully. You claimed that the deputy ministers broke the law by going into the mortuary when the bigger issue of a murder being committed was totally ignored.

The deputy ministers’ intentions were noble. They offered help to an aggrieved family. And yet the home minister took offence. Is this the treatment you give to your deputy ministers in your cabinet Syed Hamid?

I have yet to see anyone from the government praising the deputy ministers for their selfless efforts. Even though they are from MIC and Gerakan, I don’t think that these parties should be given any credit. Full credit must be given to T Murugiah and SK Devamany.

How low can Umno stoop? Is there any more bashing that they want to subject the ailing BN coalition to? Does this not prove that Umno is a bully? The wound Ahmad Said and his cohorts inflicted on BN has still not healed and yet our politicians are unrepentant.

Devamany was made a scapegoat by his fellow BN members when he defended the Hindraf rally. He, however, undid all his good deeds when he bumbled his way through an interview with Al-Jazeera and incurred the wrath of Indians.

Nor have the people forgotten the harsh words uttered by Nazri Abdul Aziz when his colleagues stood up to speak for the minority. No action was taken against him and Ahmad Said yet Devamany and Murugiah are being slammed for doing their duty.

Why the double standards? What is BN and Umno trying to prove? Isn’t it a big joke that Syed Hamid goes around the country promoting ISA in forums and yet has the gall to ask the US to shut down Guantanamo Bay?

It’s time Devamany resigned and became an independent MP if he truly believes in the struggle of the Indians and wishes to represent them in Parliament. It’s embarrassing to have lame duck ministers kowtowing to the government, unable to even speak up on behalf of the people they claim to represent.

Only Hindraf has fought for the true cause of the downtrodden Indians in this country, and no businessman can change this truth.

Thanks to Uthayakumar who highlighted cases such as that of Francis Udayappan who died at the Brickfields police station years ago, we are more aware of the injustices being inflicted on our community.

So if not for the 'storming of the morgue' incident, the truth would never have come out. Malaysians would never have got to see the real evidence and the reality of police brutality.

I strongly urge Murugaiah and Devamany to stand firm on this issue and not back down due to Umno pressure.

If they are incapable of fighting from within BN they should resign and continue this struggle from outside the coalition.
