The debate on the Umno presidential speech continues into its second day with the focus on the need for party to unite and fight off the tough challenge from the opposition.

Both Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and his Pakatan Rakyat coalition came under intense fire for their perceived threat to the Malays and the community’s special privileges.

The Perak constitutional crisis and groups such as the Bar Council which organised forums on a number sensitive issues including the social contract have also drawn anger from a number of Umno delegates.

A few delegates in today’s debate called for Umno to lead the fight against those seen to be insulting Malay rulers.

However, amid the venting their frustration today, the delegates did not forget the need to reform Umno and to restore public confidence in the embattled party.

Umno Youth delegate Nor Said Nayan, Langkawi, Kedah

Pakatan Rakyat is an illegal coalition as it is not registered. We must from now on not use the term ‘Pakatan’ and the media should stop giving them free publicity.

Umno Youth also wants the party top leadership to listen to them. There are no young leaders appointed to the cabinet. Are the youth not good enough for the job?

Ahamad Munawar Abdul Jalil, Maran, Pahang

Umno is sick and has been infected by a virus - the virus of greed. If we must vaccinate ourselves, let it be. If we must amputate ourselves, so be it. A change of leadership must occur at every level.

Malay rights have been questioned. We don’t want our own children to beg in the land that rightfully belongs to them.

Ketuanan Melayu does not mean Malay supremacy, but Malay sovereignty. The special rights of the Malays have been enshrined in the constitution.

Other races now dare to act rudely towards the Malays because of people like Anwar Ibrahim, who lies and says that we are just like other races. We have special rights in this country but even then, we are still backward compared to other races.

The government is the one to encourage to use ICT but yet Umno has not managed to fully utilise this technology unlike the opposition.

Don’t be swayed by Anwar. We must smother the opposition’s allegations. The government must take strong measures to punish those spreading lies through the Internet.

We should introduce a subject on the constitution in schools and we must have a special law to ensure the sovereignty of the monarchy is respected to avoid incidences such as in Perak.
