The recent proclamation of possible talks between two political rivals, PAS and Umno, has clearly fired up the online community.

About 300 Facebook members are part of the newly-formed ‘PAS Members & Pakatan Rakyat Supporters Against the Unity Govt with Umno!’, which calls on the Islamic opposition party not to hop in bed with its rival.

Claiming that Umno should not be trusted, the group warned “against any form of discussion or talks for affiliations between PAS and Umno”.

Forums are also bursting with opinions and comments, where some express their bewilderment with the Umno-PAS talks.

Members of a forum on TranungKite.net hotly debated the issue, with many postings speculating on the intentions of Umno.

“This talk of a unity government is a game by Umno, a war of the wits to divide PAS into two,” commented a forum member.

Another argued that PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa would fall into a trap set by Umno if he went along with the unity government idea.

However, forums on pro-Umno website, mykmu.net, vastly differed in their opinions.

A forum member encouraged the idea of a unity government, saying that PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat’s stand should not be taken too seriously and that party leaders should be open to proposal.

‘Hole in the head’

Meanwhile, DAP politician Tunku Abdul Aziz expressed slammed the proposal in his blog, declaring that Malaysians need a national unity government like they need a hole in the head .

“We who have long been in the opposition should know how difficult it is to earn public confidence... We must not put our supporters’ goodwill to the test by this highly risky and dangerous venture.”

Blogger Aspan Alias also shared similar views regarding the issue, mentioning that if PAS worked with Umno’s current leadership line-up, PAS would just be giving another lease of life for these corrupt politicians.
