Initial investigation of the suspension bridge collapse in Kuala Dipang, Kampar revealed that a weak building structure may be the cause of the tragedy that killed three pupils last month.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the initial investigation by the Public Works Departmen (PWD) also found that the construction of the bridge did not have a proper plan.

NONE However, he said, a thorough and detailed investigation was being done now by a special committee that involved various agencies like the PWD, Perak police, and the state government.

"The Education Ministry will prepare a detailed report and this is expected to be announced by end of this month," he said.

Muhyiddin said he would direct education officers at all levels to enhance efforts for students safety in all activities be they in or outside school.

This, he said, was to ensure that safety was always given attention and that all procedures set by the ministry were followed at -all times.

'Teachers did their best '

muhyiddin yassin Muhyiddin ( left ) said when he was briefed during a visit to the site, he found that teachers and trainers had followed the standard operating procedure (SOP) and the Co-curriculum Centre's management guidebook.

"I was also told that when the tragedy happened, teachers, trainers and security guards had tried their best to save the children without thinking of their own safety and lives.

"Nineteen pupils were saved from the fast waters. A teacher was injured when hit by a cable during rescue efforts," he said.

Muhyiddin extended his condolences to the families of the three children who died in the tragedy as well as to families of students who died in other tragedies.
