An anti-sodomy group has today issued a letter to Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim inviting him to be their advisor in their fight against sodomy.

According to a representative of the one-week-old Gerakan Anti Liwat (Geli) Mohd Hasri Macklin, Anwar, who is currently on trial for sodomy, is the ideal candidate as he is a youth icon.

NONE "(Anwar) is idolised by the youth, as such his involvement in Geli will attract more young people to our anti-sodomy campaign, which will be launched soon," he told reporters at the PKR headquarters today.

The letter, which was received by administrative assistant Tina Nancy Simon, also urged that Anwar file a civil suit against the prisons department and the federal government for breach of privacy.

This is in reference to a VCD Geli founder Mohd Arshad Ishak found in his mailbox last week. It was a video recording of Anwar in Sungai Buloh Prison. Arshad has since lodged a police report over it.

The recording, which appeared to be made in 2001, shows that Anwar was able to stand easily while in prison and appeared to be faking the severity of his injuries by appearing in court in a wheelchair.

In its letter, Geli also urged the de facto PKR leader to use the Pakatan Rakyat machinery to pressure the government to set up a Royal Commission to investigate the leaked recording.

"Geli represents the people of Malaysia in our desire to know the truth. If the VCD is slanderous then (Anwar) should make a police report immediately.

He added that Anwar's agreement to partake in Geli's campaign will help improve the Permatang Pauh MP's image.

When asked if a Royal Commission on the leaked VCD would be just another case of all show and little substance, Mohd Arshad took a defensive stance and said: "If you were in jail and all your movements were recorded wouldn't you want the leak to be investigated?

"The (leaked recording of a detainee being made to do ear squats in the nude) launched a Royal Commission, so why shouldn't this case be treated the same?" he said.

He, however, evaded the question of whether he is a steadfast Anwar supporter, saying that that all they are after is the truth.

PKR is the only political party which Geli has approached, he said.

Asked why they are launching an anti-sodomy campaign, Mohd Hasri said that it is a "fact that many Malay Muslim young men practice unnatural sex".

"You can see a lot of them if you go to the park at Bandar Tasik Permaisuri, so much so that even straight men who jog there become their victims.

"It is our duty to eradicate this practice before Allah does to us what He did (in Sodom and Gomorrah)," he said.
