If you receive this text message, it is nothing but an attempt to con the ignorant of their hard-earned savings. And sadly, there still many Malaysians out there falling for these hoaxes.

Malaysiakini made a call to the number provided and was told that the winner will have to deposit a certain amount first before the winnings can be banked into the his account.

NONE When contacted, a spokesperson for beverage maker Power Root in Kuala Lumpur said the SMS was a hoax and urged the recipients not to fall for such blatant attempts to cheat the people.

She said it was absolutely preposterous to claim that Power Root would give away such prizes for no reason.

"We are incensed with the group using our name to cheat the people of their money. We have lodged a police report on the matter and hope that those responsible are apprehended quickly," she added.

‘Police can trace callers easily'

Fomca president N Marimuthu urged the police to act quickly as the number as well as the contact person is named in the SMS.

"Under the current mobile line registration system, we can trace the callers easily," he said.

Marimuthu also blamed Malaysians who did not seem to use logic while evaluating such messages, adding that it was greed that led them to lose their hard-earned savings.

"The get-rich-quick syndrome among Malaysians is quite prevalent. They do not realise that no organisation will dish out money for nothing," he said.
