Teluk Intan DAP MP M Manogaran accused the Dewan Rakyat today of being in "cahoots" with the government, the police, and the Attorney-General's (AG) Chambers, instead of being non-partisan, for rejecting an emergency motion submitted by Kapar MP S Manikavasagam to debate the alleged torture of N Tharmendran.

"I think we are at the threshold of a very serious conspiracy involving the Defence Ministry, the then defence minister, police, and the AG's office for not questioning why he is charged," said Manogaran.

The reason for rejecting the motion on grounds that it was not in national interest, is "sad and disappointing", he said.

Earlier, Parliament speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia had rejected an emergency motion submitted by Kapar MP to debate the alleged torture of Tharmendran, a former RMAF sergeant who was implicated in the controversial theft of two F5E jet engines.

'Not of national interest'

In explaining the rejection in Parliament this morning, Deputy speaker Ronald Kiandee said this is an important issue but it was not a matter of national interest.

"Matters of government business must take precedence," Kiandee told Manikavasagam.

He also said that the case is no longer considered “urgent” as there were already ongoing investigations into the matter.

"If no action has yet been taken by authorities, then this motion can be used to force the government to take action, but since the matter is already being addressed, your request is too late," he explained.

The former airman told Malaysiakini on Monday that he was beaten and tortured by military intelligence officers to force him to confess to the charge.

NONE Tharmendran ( far right in photo ) has been jointly charged with Rajandran Prasad Kusy with the theft of two fighter jet engines at the Subang Air Force base in December 2007.

If found guilty under Section 380 of the Penal Code, he could be sentenced to 10 years' jail.

Tharmendran also faces a second charge of abetment under Section 109 of the Penal Code for collaborating with senior airman Mohamad Shukri Mohamad Yusop in the theft of the engines.
