Speculation on a note alleged to be deceased political aide Teoh Beng Hock’s ‘final testament’ had emerged as early as last month, although the attorney-general only confirmed its existence yesterday.

However, said Se NONE langor DAP chief Ean Yong Hian Wah (right) , the origin of such speculation has raised more questions than answers.

“Why did the news suddenly come out from the Umno side, through blogs and Utusan (Malaysia) , and not from the AG’s Chambers or from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)?” he asked.

Word of the existence of the document was first reported by the Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia , following a press conference by the NGO Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM).

According to the July 24 report, JMM alleged that it had learnt of the existence of an “important letter” which could prove that the 30-year-old - found dead on July 16 last year following MACC interrogation - was under immense pressure.

When contacted, JMM secretary-general Tengku Amaluddin Sani said the group had learnt of the document “three to four days” before it alerted the media.

“It’s a good thing that it will be tendered as evidence (at the inquest). If it is true then it should be available to the court,” he said.

Pro-Umno blogs have focused much discussion on the document and accused lawyer Tan Hock Chuan - who is representing the federal government - of ‘hiding’ the evidence.

Ezam weighs in

Former PKR leader and newly-minted senator Ezam Mohd Nor has also called for an explanation of the ‘note’ from the police and the MACC.

“I believe that Ezam has lodged a police report on the matter,” said Ean Yong, a Selangor executive councillor and the Seri Kembangan assemblyperson.

azlan Teoh was working as Ean Yong’s political aide at the time of his death, and had been questioned as a witness into alleged irregularities in the disbursement of state allocations.  

The document, which AG Abdul Gani Patail said was found two months after Teoh’s death, was intended to be tendered in the coroner’s court yesterday.

This was however contested by the family’s lawyer, Gobind Singh Deo, who said this was against procedures because the document had been withheld until yesterday morning.

The inquest will resume on Aug 18 with Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand’s testimony.
