Hudud laws (Islamic laws in their strictest form) are the best solution for tackling crimes, said Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

Nik Aziz, who is also PAS spiritual leader, said the present laws in the country were ineffective in combating crimes and social ills like baby dumping and that enforcement was a secondary issue compared to instilling the right religious values in people.

He told this to reporters after opening a seminar on caning under syariah laws at Kompleks Balai Islam in Kota Bharu today. 

Kelantan introduced hudud laws after PAS came into power in the state in 1990 but has been unable to enforce the laws because they contradict the Federal Constitution.

Examples of these laws are chopping off the hands of thieves and stoning of adulterers.
