A police report was lodged today against Perak Menteri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir and an MCA state exco member Mah Heng Soon for allegedly distributing to the public 50,000 DVD recordings of the infamous May 7, 2009 Perak state assembly sitting without the mandatory B censorship certificate from the Film Censorship Board.

The report was lodged at Ipoh district police headquarters at 10.30am by former Pakatan Rakyat state assembly speaker V Sivakumar who led a group of Pakatan youth leaders.

NONE In his report, Sivakumar said the BN-sponsored DVD was about 25 minutes long and dubbed in both Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese with sub-titles. They were allegedly distributed to NGOs and the public.

Speaking to reporters later, Sivakumar questioned the police’s selected prosecution and double standards in hauling up DAP Tebing Tinggi assemblyperson Ong Boon Piow recently for distributing Pakatan DVDs of the sitting without the mandatory certification.

On Sept 7, the Ipoh Magistrate’s Court deferred the charge against Ong. He is alleged to have had 23 DVDs containing recordings of the March 3, 2009 emergency session of the Perak state legislative assembly held under the famous `Democracy Tree’ ( above ).

The recordings had allegedly not been submitted to the Film Censorship Board for approval.

Quick action lacking

Ong was alleged to have committed the offence at the Chin Woo Hall in Ipoh on March 29 during a party function where the DVD was also screened.

Perak police chief Zulkifli Abdullah, however, was recently quoted as saying that the police would investigate BN leaders for distributing their version of the DVD if a police report is made.

To this, Sivakumar asked: "Then what happened to the investigation on the police report made by DAP Aulong assemblyperson Yew Tiang Ho against Zambry and Mah over this DVD issue at Taiping district police headquarters on Sept 9?"

Sivakumar said his main intention was not so much for the police to arrest Zambry and Mah but for the principles of freedom of democracy to prevail in the state.

He said Special Branch officers were quick to arrest Ong at the time of the incident but failed to take the same quick action against Zambry and Mah.
