After failing to dock RM10 off the Attorney-General's salary, veteran parliamentarian Lim Kit Siang trained his guns on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

He blamed the agency for Malaysia's fall in international corruption rankings, and demanded that a similar amount be deducted from its chief commissioner.

This has resulted in Malaysia becoming the worst country in Asia-Pacific in the Transparency-International (TI) corruption perception index (CPI) in the past 16 years since its inception.

Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo also lamented that Malaysia lags behind countries like China and India in the success rate for conviction of corruption cases.

However, their arguments were set aside by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Nazri Aziz, who said that the ratings and conviction rates may not be too accurate a description of the actual situation.

"In the 2000 policy oriented survey commissioned by Norwegian Agency for Development Corporation (NORAD), the CPI is not based by the survey conduct by TI itself. It is mainly based on different polls or survey conducted by independent organisations - in fact these surveys don't just cover corruption," he said.

Nazri said that Malaysia cannot be compared to countries like China where the conviction rates are a hundred percent.

"You know a country like that...," he said without elaborating.

He said the MACC is doing a good enough job with 60 percent conviction rate.

"I would be worried if the conviction rate is 90 percent, it would seem like our courts just convict people."

Nazri argued that the lower number of corruption cases being prosecuted is because cases were filtered out if there was not enough proof.

"We must be careful. If there is no solid evidence, then it would be embarrassing for the person who is charged," he added.

The minister also praised the exemplary efforts of defence attorneys, which many of the opposition parliamentarians are, who had successfully defended corruption offenders against conviction.

However in rebutting the motion Nazri also praised Lim who he said is an "influential person" and asked the Ipoh Timur MP's help in fighting corruption.

"The Lim Kit Siang blog has 20,307 views daily, which is more than Chedet's (former premier Mahathir Mohamad) and Anwar Ibrahim's blog. He is influential, YB can actually help us battle corruption.

"After this we'll have coffee and let's discuss how to fight corruption, which we both hate. I know you love Malaysia as much as I do. I know you are a patriot," said Nazri.

But like the motion against the AG, the proposal was voted down by the BN-majority Parliament.
