DAP is hoping to register at least 10,000 new voters this weekend, as it prepares to face possible snap polls as early as this July.

NONE Party national publicity chief Tony Pua ( left ) said the two-day campaign from May 28 will be held at 12 locations simultaneously in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to help tackle the burgeoning number of voters who are eligible but who are not registered.

"Currently, the EC (Election Commission) puts the number of unregistered voters at approximately four million. Therefore a huge number of Malaysian citizens are missing out on contributing significantly to the democratic process," he said at a press conference at the DAP headquarters today.

Pua noted that based on EC statistics, political parties in Malaysia had registered 175,997 new voters in the last quarter of 2010.

Despite the collective efforts by the political parties, this barely made a dent on the EC's estimate of unregistered voters.

Little choice

Pua said that, because of the EC's inability to perform its duties, political parties have little choice but to register as many Malaysians as possible.

The EC has claimed that the administration cost to register one voter is RM13.81, which would mean it would cost RM55.24 million to register the four million eligible citizens.

"This contrasts sharply with the RM1 paid to assistant registrars (political party members who are authorised by the EC) for each successful registration.

"It is obvious that the EC's outreach activities such as mobile counters, are inefficient and not at all cost-effective. To date, the EC's track record is dismal and unsatisfactory," Pua said.

azlan He urged Malaysians who have yet to register as voters to come out in droves this weekend, stressing that it takes at least four to six months before a new voter is included on the electoral rolls.

"This is because the registrations are only processed every three months, and the time period for objections has to be factored in too," he said.

Pua noted that while the registration drive will be in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, it is open to all Malaysians as they will be registered according to the address on their MyKad.
