The Royal Commission on the Police is not expected to start grilling police chiefs until after heads of department complete their presentations to the committee.

At their meeting this morning, commissioners heard presentations from Inspector-General of Police Mohd Bakri Omar and respective directors of internal security and public order, logistics, and administration.

The commission is expected to receive an official memorandum from the police once the remaining divisions - narcotics, special branch, and crime - complete their presentations next Thursday, said commission chairperson Mohd Dzaiddin Abdullah.

"Our position here today is to hear what they have to say. We will only ask questions after the end of next week's presentation," he said at a press conference following the three-hour dialogue.

Mohd Bakri presented commissioners with an overview and brief history of the police force, while department chiefs explained the organisational aspects of their work, said Dzaiddin

The commission will also meet with retired members of the force, and the association of serving officers.

Website almost ready

All but one of the 16 commissioners were present at today's meeting - Transparency International president Tunku Abdul Aziz is abroad.

Dzaiddin also announced that the commission's website would be officially launched next Thursday, enabling the public to send in their comments or grouses.

At their first meeting last Wednesday in Putrajaya, commissioners pledged transparency of proceedings, while providing protection for whistleblowers who request this.

Under the terms given by the King, the commission is required to complete its investigations and deliver its recommendations within a year of its appointment on Feb 4.

The royal commission was formed following acknowledgement by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi last year that the country's police force was facing a major crisis of confidence, following allegations of corruption and excessive use of force.
