The parliamentary select committee (PSC) on the safety of Lynas' RM700 million rare-earth processing plant in Gebeng, Kuantan is merely intended to deflect criticism until after the next general election, said Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh.

NONE She warned that should Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak be returned to power in the next polls, he would bulldoze the highly unpopular project forward, against the wishes of the people.

"When he returns to power after the next general election, he can give Lynas the go ahead to operate, despite all the protests that he has seen,” said Fuziah ( right ) in a statement today.

The government’s insistence in buying time for the Lynas plant, she said, will hamper any future effort to cancel the project as the compensation costs will continue to mount.

This delaying tactic, she added, has been apparent in other high profile cases where commissions and trials had been initiated to placate public outrage, ultimately with no follow up action to resolve the issues.

'Gov't will side Lynas'

"In the case of Teoh Beng Hock, it was first the inquiry, then the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI), but no action taken against the few Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission staff in the Selangor office.

"We have also seen the trial of Altantuya Sharibuu's tragic death, how the third defendant was suddenly acquitted, and a number of questions have yet to be answered.," she said

Teoh was a DAP aide found dead from mysteriously falling off the MACC building after being taken in for questioning as a witness while Altantuya was a translator in a submarine defence deal brutally shot dead and her body blown up with military-grade explosives.

Among others, Fuziah said is Najib’ s refusal to act in the National Feedlot scandal and allegations that Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail had framed the police.

"There are just too many other cases which have shaken the people’s confidence in our country’s administration, the judiciary, the police and the MACC. Can we trust that Najib will act in the interest of the people, even after the PAC has tabled its report?"

Fuziah said that as long as the BN holds power in Putrajaya, the controversial Lynas plant will commence operations eventually.

"There is no way, despite all the demonstrations and protests being held by folks in Gebeng, Kuantan and nationwide, for the people of Malaysia to stop Lonas unless the BN administration at Putrajaya is first removed in the coming general election," she said.

'MCA shouldn't punish anti-Lynas supporters'

In a separate statement, Fuziah expressed support for Indera Mahkota MCA Youth chief David Choi who has been served a show-cause letter by his party, one of the reasons being for his participation in the anti-Lynas movement.

"I want to state here that the anti-Lynas group is a bipartisan movement and we welcome anyone's participation in rejecting the Gebeng plant," she said.

Urging MCA not to see this based on partisan lines, Fuziah said that Pakatan Rakyat too has not taken any action against Hulu Langat MP Che Rosli Che Mat who supports the project, a view that ran contrary to the opposition coalition's stance.

Choi has in the past attracted attention by leading MCA members in participating both the Himpunan Hijau gatherings, which was largely backed by opposition participants.
