Malaysia may consider bringing in workers, including maids from Burma, to overcome a shortage of foreign maids following a two-year freeze on maids by the Indonesian government.

Malaysia has agreed to consider the request by Burma during Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s two-day official visit to the country which ended today.

Najib told Malaysian reporters at the end of his visit today that there was a possibility that Burmese nationals be employed as house maids but added that further discussions would be needed.

“We need further discussions about the proposal, we do not know the terms and conditions. But if the terms are acceptable, we certainly can consider that,” he said.

Najib said Malaysia was receptive of the proposal to employ maids from Burma.

Describing the Burmese people as “polite people”, Najib said it would not be that difficult to pursue the proposal if they were able to fit in culturally with Malaysia’s way of life.

Najib said he had informed Burma that about 250,000 Burmese nationals had registered under the 6P Programme.
