PAS Youth denies that its Unit Amal had charged a police human wall outside Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) during the Bersih 3.0 rally on Saturday.

Instead, PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan said hundreds of police officers had formed a wall with locked arms, except for the police’s right flank at the intersection of Jalan Ampang towards Jalan P Ramlee.

Nasrudin said that the police had formed a line at the intersection of Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, Jalan Ampang and Jalan P Ramlee, but the personnel standing at Jalan P Ramlee were not in formation.

“Therefore, the Unit Amal (Welfare Unit) felt that this was the space to escape and slip pass the police siege, and the anti-Lynas protesters could escape the area without clashing with the police,”  said Nasrudin at a press conference this morning.

NONE When confronted by reporters with images showing Unit Amal members running towards the police line at the 10.50am incident, Nasrudin said the picture confirms what he said because it shows that one member of the group had already slipped passed the blockade.

“If they had joined arms, there shouldn’t have been anyone who had slipped pass,” he said, adding that the police on that part of the line had only tried to close ranks when they saw the protesters approaching.

The youth leader also questioned the police’s move of blocking the road from KLCC to Dataran Merdeka since it is not a restricted area.

NONE He also said that PAS’s welfare group was there to maintain order and to prevent any provocations, hence the police were not their target.

In addition, Nasrudin ( left ) asked Malay daily Sinar Harian to retract and apologise for reporting on Sunday that Unit Amal had stormed the police.

“Based on Unit Amal’s track record, it does not make sense and is unreasonable to believe that they would use violence and charge the police,” he said.

NONE Reporters were also shown a video purporting to show several traffic police officers beating a protester, and a Unit Amal member being prevented from intervening.

Nasrudin also urged those with footage of police brutality during the rally to pass it, or its YouTube link, to the party.
