The police have obtained a two-week remand order against the 21 Burmese pro-democracy activists arrested for demonstrating outside the Burmese embassy in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Democratic Federation of Burma (DFB) leader Thet Oo said the detainees, including freelance journalist Sein Mar and her seven-year-old daughter, were brought to the Kuala Lumpur magistrate's court this morning.

Their remand order will expire on May 27.

Oo said he had managed to contact Mar, who told him that an officer from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) would meet her tomorrow.

According to Oo, Mar and her daughter were being held at the Jalan Travers police station while the rest were detained elsewhere.

"Some of them are being held in the Pudu police station while others are being held at the detention centre at the old Pudu jail," he said when contacted.

National convention

Following their arrest yesterday, the protestors were taken to the Pudu police station before being transferred to the Cheras district police headquarters.

They had gathered at the embassy to protest a national convention that was held in Rangoon yesterday to discuss the formation of a constitution for Burma.

Cheras district police chief Mohd Noor Masdar could not be reached for comment.

The main opposition party in Burma, the National League for Democracy (NLD) had boycotted the convention as its leaders, Aung Sang Suu Kyi and Tin Oo remained under house arrest.

Burma has the been the target of severe criticism from human rights activists following a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy activists by the military regime.
