Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin said he will not contest in Kepala Batas, a seat currently held by his father-in-law Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in the upcoming general election as he has no affiliation with the constituency.

“I have nothing to do with other places… I have already informed the BN leadership, I want to stay in Rembau if I am allowed to contest,” he said.

Khairy ( right ) was responding to a question from the audience during a chit-chat session with BN Youth volunteers last night on whether he would shift to stand in Kepala Batas.

He was also asked if the decision, if it were true, was being made to avoid confronting his opponent Rembau PKR leader Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard. The Umno Youth chief replied that his father-in-law already expressed intention to have a local to vie for his seat, which he is not.

"It also makes no sense for me to move to another constituency just because of Chegubard. Why should I afraid of someone I defeated once?" he said, referring to the 2008 general election results when he won with a majority of 5746 votes.

Khairy's present stand appears to be a U-turn from his announcement early last year that he would not re-contest Rembau because wanted to take a break from politics.

Another term with youth wing

Khairy also dismissed claims that he is eyeing the Umno vice president or deputy president posts in the coming party polls when asked, saying that he prefers staying in the youth wing for another term.

He said his transformation plan for the youth wing has only half succeeded, so his work to change its culture and attitude still remains unfinished.

Explaining to reporters later, he said he must ensure the changes have taken root before leaving for a higher position.

"They are quite happy about the changes. We are moving in the right direction; it's just that I want to make sure the changes take," he said.

At one point in the two-hour chat session the crowd exploded with loud cheers and applause when Khairy declared that he had never supported opposition leader leader Anwar Ibrahim ( left ) before.

"I never kissed his hand once, unlike some other Umno leaders who now hold senior ranks in the party but used to kiss his hand and swallow his ring," he quipped.

He added that he had never agreed with Anwar's ideology and the way he goes about his work.
