The mother of missing police detainee G Francis Udayapan, who is feared dead, today provided the police with her blood sample for a DNA test to determine if a body found in the Klang river recently is that of her son.

However, G Sara Lily, who was accompanied by her lawyers to the University Malaya Medical Centre, made it clear that she was doing this under duress and under protest.

Although she signed a police statement saying she gave blood voluntarily, her lawyer N Surendran claimed that this did not reflect the true picture.

"The police told us that they will not release the body of Francis to the family until and unless a blood sample is obtained from Sara Lily," he claimed.

"The police are using the body as a bargaining chip. We find this absolutely disrespectful and insensitive. Sara has no choice but to comply because she wants to bury her son. We stress that she is doing this under protest," he said.

Protracted dispute

Sara and her lawyers have been locked in a protracted dispute with the police ever since she was told that her son had escaped from the Brickfields police headquarters on April 16 by jumping into a nearby river.

She alleged that her son could have been fatally assaulted by the police and his body dumped into the river. Subsequently, the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters probed the matter but ruled out foul play.

Francis, a 24-year-old VCD seller, was arrested in connection with a petty theft case and was being remanded at the district police headquarters at the time of the incident.

On May 23, the police recovered the highly-decomposed remains of a man whom they believe could be Francis and insisted on a DNA test despite Sara identifying the corpse as her son based on his tattoos and teeth deformity.

"I know the body is of my son's, nothing can change it." she said when met at the hospital this morning.

The police have also refused to provide her access to the DNA of the corpse so that she can conduct an independent medical test.

Post-mortem result

Earlier, the police said a DNA test done with her husband's blood had come out negative but the family's request for a copy of the chemist report on this was rejected.

"The police have not given her a copy of the chemist's report on her husband's test. Why? What are they afraid of? Do they have something to hide?" asked Surendran.

Yesterday, the police said both the chemist report and post-mortem report cannot be released to the family as the case is still under investigation.

The lawyer reiterated that the family has yet to receive a copy of the post-mortem result done on the remains as well.

According to investigating officer Nik Rosazhan Nik Abdul Hamid, the DNA test with Sara's blood will be ready on Monday..
