Police: No new light in abduction probe of journalist
The police have not made any headway in its investigation into the alleged abduction and assault of Burmese journalist Ko Minn Kyaw Minn, said Sepang district police chief Zahedi Ayob today.
The police have not made any headway in its investigation into the alleged abduction and assault of Burmese journalist Ko Minn Kyaw Minn, said Sepang district police chief Zahedi Ayob today.
"So far, there are no developments to the case, there is no new information," he added when contacted.
On June 1, Minn Kyaw claimed he was abducted by a group of men on his way to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport with his Malaysian wife to cover the arrival of Burmese premier Khin Nyunt.
After being released some 12 hours later, he told reporters that four men and a Burmese woman had grilled him on his activities and also assaulted him.
Minn Kyaw, who has a three-month-old daughter, claimed that his abductors identified themselves as Malaysian police special branch personnel. He also believes that Burmese military intelligence personnel were involved.
The 26-year-old journalist subsequently filed a police report and also lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).
Minn Kyaw, who has been accorded refugee status by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), also stated that he could identify his abductors.
Bukit Aman later denied any involvement in the abduction.
Photofit released
Meanwhile, Zahedi said the police had released a photofit of the Burmese woman, whom Minn Kyaw claimed interrogated him, to the press more than two weeks ago but have yet to receive any response.
On criticism from certain quarters that the police are being lackadaisical about the case, he replied: "We will continue the investigations but will review our strategy at some point if we do not make headway."
Last week, Suhakam complaints and inquiry division chief Jamaludin Othman said that the human rights watchdog is monitoring the case via the press and police.
