In what appeared to be a contract killing, a timber businessman's wife was shot dead when a gunman opened fire while the couple, together with another couple, were seated at a table in a five-foot path outside a cafe in Pahlawan Road, Sibu, this afternoon.

Law Leh Kuong, 44, who was shot in the head at close-range, succumbed to the injuries at a private medical centre, about three hours after the shooting which occurred outside the 101 Cafe about 12.10pm.

The gunman, who used a pump-action shotgun, escaped in a waiting red Proton Wira car in which were three other accomplices.

Law's husband, Lau Ngik Yin alias Ah Kang, 42, who also operates an entertainment centre, sustained gunshot wounds in the throat and back, while his cousin, who was accompanied by his wife, was slightly injured.

The four were seated at a table outside the cafe when the gunman arrived in the car and began firing at them at random.

Bernama understands the police are investigating gangsterism and illegal gambling, as among the motives behind the shooting.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Acryl Sani said Law succumbed to gunshot wounds in the head at 3.15pm, at the medical centre.

He said she had joined her husband and his cousin and the latter's wife for lunch at a table outside the cafe when a red Proton Wira arrived nearby.

"Two of four men alighted from the car before one of them began firing at the two couples," he added.
