Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) has blocked a forum on the general election organised by its students representative council.

UIA Students Representative Council (MPPUIA) president Muhammad Hamidi Zamri confirmed that he received a letter on the decision from the Department of Student Affairs dean Akmal Khuzairy Abdul Rahman two days ago.

Entitled 'GE13: Malaysia's Hope', the forum scheduled for next Monday was cancelled due to "unavoidable circumstances".

NONE "What we understand is that that political programmes are not allowed on campus, supposedly to prevent big problems... We are curious about the (actual) reason," Muhammad ( left ) told Malaysiakini when contacted.

He expressed disappointment over the cancellation as organisers have completed over 80 percent of preparations, including preparing the venue at the university’s Cultural Activity Centre.

Among those slated to be in the forum include former Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, Universiti Pertahanan Nasional senior lecturer Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, PAS Youth vice-chief Raja Ahmad Iskandar Raja Yaacob and Umno Youth new media unit chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz.

“All the panellists have agreed to attend except for Mohd Asri. But it’s okay, we have a backup. We have informed the panellists of the cancellation,” he said.

However, Muhammad, who is an economic faculty student, said that he will continue to talk to the UIA administration to allow the programme to go on.
