Australian rare earths miner Lynas Corp intends to discontinue its defamation claim against the Save Malaysia Stop Lynas group (SMSL).

Lynas initiated legal proceedings against SMSL in April last year.

Its chief executive officer Eric Noyrez said the decision was taken as he saw no value in continuing the dispute with the local community.

“It is no longer the case of being right, or proving that the plant, is safe.

“In making a conscious and voluntarily decision to drop our defamation claim, we think it is time to move on. We want to continue engaging the community and show that Lynas is a good thing for Malaysia,” he told Bernama .

Noyrez said since the commencement of operations at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp) in Kuantan in November last year, the measured emissions on site, have consistently been significantly lower than the limits specified in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Radiological Impact Assessment (RIA).

“The actual emission monitoring results are displayed at our site, and also available on the websites of the Department of Environment (DoE) and the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB).

“This is to prove that our products and processes are safe for people and the environment,” he added.
