This dangerous thing called handouts
KINIBIZ You don’t need to be a Tiger to learn a few things from the laws of the jungle. For instance it is well-known that animals which get food handouts from human beings eventually lose the ability to fend for themselves and become permanently dependent on man for their food.
That’s why when human beings go into the jungle or into areas that come into contact with wild animals they have to be repeatedly reminded not to feed the animals. But sad to say humans don’t learn too well, even when reminded and insist on making the mistakes to the detriment of us animals.
If someone threw Tiger some fresh meat everyday, Tiger would eventually lose the ability to hunt wild animals and will prey instead on human beings who are much easier to catch but who may not be as tasty. And then we will be labelled man-eaters and there will be a hunt to kill us.
When will man ever learn!
Now for the lesson. Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who will face an Umno general assembly and elections later this year, has announced a slew of economic measures for “bumiputera economic empowerment” said to be worth an estimated RM30 billion.
But clearly one cannot empower an entire community virtually overnight. You can give handouts and grants and make sure they get some amount of contracts but that is not empowerment. Empowerment is when they generate income on their own.
