Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim today accused Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of misleading the Dewan Rakyat by claiming that the opposition had made an allegation about 40,000 Bangladeshi foreign workers being registered as voters in the country.

In a brief press conference in the Parliament lobby today, Anwar said his team has checked and determined that the opposition never made such an allegation.

“We spoke about foreign voters and voters bring flown in. But never about 40,000 Bangladeshis being registered by the Election Commission,” he said.

“These allegations were actually created in pro-Umno blogs,” Anwar added.

NONE Najib stated the allegation, which he said was made by the opposition, in his Budget speech and went on to laugh it off while asking those who made the allegation to “repent”.

Anwar also rubbished the Bangladesh prime minister's denial that the country's citizens had voted during May's general elections in Malaysia.

"What would the Bangladesh prime minister know?" Anwar asked.

"This is a Malaysian issue. We should handle it. An independent body must be set up to look into the allegations."

On May 2, three days before polling day, Anwar had alleged that the Prime Minister's office was linked to flying in dubious voters from key cities in Sabah and Sarawak through several chartered Malaysian Airlines (MAS) flights.

Back then, he said that by polling day, more than 40,000 people would have been flown in through these flights.

He had claimed back then that the flight manifests, which he had claimed to be in the possession of PKR, showed that most of the passengers in these flights were dubious voters.

However, he did not specifically stated that the over 40,000 alleged phantom voters were Bangladeshis.
