A Bangladeshi witness in the "false news" trial of Tenaganita director Irene Fernandez today told the court of several incidences of tortures which he and other detainees had to endure in the Kemayan detention camp in Pahang six years ago.

Moron Mozumder told magistrate Juliana Mohamed that he was constantly beaten, stripped naked, sexually humiliated and forced to do gruelling physical punishments during his 21-month detention.

"One day, the inmates and I were ordered by the police to undress. We were totally nude and were instructed to sit cross-legged (in a Buddha position) in one line. Three police officers then walked on our knees. They were wearing boots," Moron Mozumder said, adding that he was stepped on his knees six times.

He told the court that the police singled out an imam who conducted prayer sessions among the detainees for public humiliation.

"The police stripped him and made him wear dark sunglasses. They forced him to walk from wall to wall in our block."

Asked by defence counsel M. Puravalen how he felt during the incident, Mozumder replied that he cried when he saw the imam naked.

"We are not cows," he said. "He (the iman ) was a respected imam . At that time I felt that the police in this country can do anything," he said.

Mozumder also recounted that he was beaten and made to do physical exercises one night after he was caught urinating outside the block.

"It was after 9pm and I could not use the toilet. I went outside to urinate because the bucket in the hall was overflowing with urine. The police came and took me out to the field. They punished me the whole night. They beat me up, ordered me to leap frog and roll on the ground," he said.

On another occasion, he said that the police forced them to hang from a fence wire after they found a razor blade during a search.

"The police took all of us out to the field. We were ordered by the police to hold onto the (fence) wire and hang from it for about 30 to 40 minutes.

"After sometime, I fell onto the ground and was beaten on the soles of my feet with a cane. They beat me severely three to four times. The pain was very severe," he said.

He also said that he and the other inmates were so tired that they had to crawl back to their block after being collectively punished.

"One night, the handle of the bucket in our block went missing. We were all called out of the block and punished in the field throughout the night. And at dawn, it rained. After getting wet, we crawled back to our block because our bodies were totally exhausted."

Mozumder is the second Bangladeshi former detainee to testify on the conditions of the detention camps in the trial.

He threw up twice and broke down once during his sixth day of testimony today.
