    Condolences on sultan’s death

5pm: BN candidate Mah Siew Keong expresses his deepest condolences to the royal family of the sultan of Perak.

“Tuanku cared for the people a lot and (he) will be missed by the rakyat,” Mah says when contacted by Malaysiakini.

On the by-election campaign, Mah says some of the programmes will be cancelled or scaled down.

“We will wait for the official notification from the palace on the protocol to be followed,” he added.

4.30pm: DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud has expressed her condolences to the sultan's family on her Facebook page.

She says that the late sultan was a symbol of “unity and brotherhood" among the people of Perak.

“With the support DAP leaders and Pakatan Rakyat members I wish that Allah blesses your soul,” the Ipoh-born 27-year-old said.

    Dyana a 'remote control' candidate

4.15pm: Gerakan party advisor Chang Ko Youn lambasts Dyana Sofya over her inconsistent stand on hudud.

According to Bernama, Chang refers to Dyana’s initial defence of DAP's anti-hudud stance, but later said in an interview that she did not reject hudud.

"Which is which?" he is quoted saying in a news conference.

In an interview with Malaysiakini , Dyana, a lawyer, stressed that she was not against hudud but opined that its implementation in Malaysia is not feasible until socio-economic issues are addressed.

He further labels her a “remote control” candidate, claiming she is

under the control of DAP leaders

    Gerakan offers 'baby' Dyana pacifier

2.30pm: Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud is mocked for her apparent dependance on her boss, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, as he is seen to be constantly accompanying her in the duration of the Teluk Intan by-election campaign.

Penang Gerakan Youth member Rich Too Seng Shin jests that as a result, the constituents in Gelang Patah are searching for their “lost” representative. Lim is the MP for Gelang Patah in Johor.

"I was asked by people in Gelang Patah to seek for Lim.

"If the newbie (Dyana) will cry without Lim, she can get a pacifier from us," he tells reporters at the Leaning Tower in Teluk Intan.

He says he will distribute 100 pieces of “MP missing” flyers to voters in Teluk Intan so they can tell Lim to go return to where he is needed.

On the flyers are printed the words: "If you see this MP, please inform the rakyat in Gelang Patah".

    Dyana 'copied' BN's idea

1pm: Gerakan's Simpang Renggam MP Liang Teck Meng says the manifesto unveiled by DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud yesterday is a mere “copy-and-paste” piece, without any substance.

In a press conference at the main Gerakan by-election operations centre, Liang says the manifesto simply reflects the superficial mindset that the candidate has.

“If she wants to talk about clean governance, why didn't she respond to land scandal involving DAP Perak leaders and former PAS-led Kedah government on logging scandal and the state-owned Insaniah university college irregularities?” he asks.

Liang also says Dyana's pledge on leading a new generation of development is a copied idea from BN candidate Mah Siew Keong.

    Background:

    • The seat fell vacant after former MP Seah Leong Peng, from DAP, passed away due to cancer on May 1.

  • DAP is fielding 27-year-old lawyer and Lim Kit Siang's former political secretary, Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud.
  •

  • If elected, she will become DAP's first Malay female MP, second youngest DAP MP to be elected and only the third Malay parliamentarian for the party in the current sitting.
  •

  • Meanwhile BN is putting forth veteran politican, well-known local boy and Gerakan president Mah Siew Kong.
  •

  • Mah previously held the seat for two terms between 1999 to 2008 and was assemblyperson for Pasir Bedemar, located in the parliamentary constituency.
