MCA Youth expressed unhappiness with Umno today for submitting a motion on hudud to the Selangor legislative assembly for its political gain.

Selangor MCA Youth secretary Chan Wun Hoong (right) said the move by Umno assemblyperson Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik is a “political trick” to gain media attention, but it is in fact a “waste of time”.

Chan said tabling a motion for a feasibility study on the implementation of the Islamic penal code in the state was also unconstitutional and disrespectful to non-Mulims.

“The Federal Constitution must be defended. MCA Youth will stand against any attempt or intention to introduce hudud,” Chan told reporters at a press conference today.

He added that Selangor legislative assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh, who is DAP's Subang Jaya assemblyperson, should have not allowed the motion and cannot say she was obliged to do so as she is not Muslim.

“Her approval of the motion is disappointing to all of us,” he said.

'S'gor gov't to blame too'

Chan also implicated the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat government in the matter by saying that the state could have been firmer in rejecting the hudud motion.

He said it would be more productive debating issues such as water rationing.

“I am sure that if the Selangor government is firm to reject hudud in Selangor, no crisis related to this matter will be brought up,” he said.

The motion, along with another two, has been approved by Yeoh (left) for debate and is to be tabled in the Selangor state assembly, which will sit from Monday.

Another motion on water rationing was rejected as Yeoh said it had been raised in the assembly before.

She added that she approved the hudud motion because she felt the assembly is the right place for such debate to happen.

“As the speaker, I have to be fair. If the motion deserves time in the assembly to be debated, we should.

“There is no point if everybody is talking about it outside (the assembly), but nobody wants to tackle it face-to-face,” she told reporters this morning.

She later tweeted: "MCA and Gerakan have no courage to talk to UMNO about their hudud motion. Instead, they criticize the speaker for allowing debate. I am amused."
