In a move to further combat corruption, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday launched a new support department, the MACC Forensic Department.

MACC chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed said with the department, the MACC would be able to increase its forensic capabilities in investigating a case.

He noted that the setting up of the forensic department would enable MACC officers to handle complex cases.

“This is extremely important because the investigating officers need to have forensic capabilities to solve a corruption case,” he said when met by Bernama during a special briefing and opening of the MACC Forensic Department at Menara Prisma in Putrajaya.

He said currently, corruption cases were different and more complex in many areas than previously, as they involved various types of equipment, including the use of computers.

At the same time, Abu Kassim also urged MACC officers to improve their knowledge in forensic elements when handling corruption cases.

“Now, bribery payments are no longer made directly and the MACC needs individuals who have the skills to detect the flow of bribery money,” he said.

“I urge the Forensics Department to give on-the-job training to MACC officers to give them the exposure,” he said.
