Although PKR deputy president Azmin Ali has retained his post, all but one in the line-up for vice-president are in party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s faction in the PKR election results announced today.

The party’s strategy director and key mover of the ‘Kajang Move’, Mohd Rafizi Ramli, won a vice-president’s post to consolidate his position in the party.

Another newcomer to the VP line-up is former youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, who had reportedly backed Azmin for nomination as Selangor menteri besar before the party decided to nominate party president Wan Azizah instead.

The ‘Kajang Move’ is the catchphrase for PKR’s attempts to replace incumbent Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim with PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim through the Kajang by-election.

The plan fell apart when Anwar was convicted of sodomy and disqualified from the by-election. Wan Azizah is now the Kajang assemblyperson and Pakatan’s choice to replace Khalid.

Fuziah Salleh lost in her bid to defend her seat as vice-president.

As Kuantan MP, Fuziah had been a key mover in the anti-Lynas movement.

Also losing out on the VP's post was N Surendran, who was previously appointed to the vice-presidency.

Surendran, a lawyer, is best known for his work in representing victim’s families in death-in-custody cases.

Meanwhile, former vice-president Mansor Othman did not contest in the race, while former Selangor exco member Dr A Xavier Jeyakumar lost in his bid for the vice-presidency. Both of them are seen as pro-Azmin.

Incumbent vice-presidents Nurul Izzah Anwar and Chua Tian Chang retained their posts with the two highest number of votes. Both of them are seen to be pro-Wan Azizah.

Wan Azizah ( right ) retained her party presidency uncontested, while Azmin defeated his challenger Saifuddin Nasution Ismail with nearly twice the number of votes.

Azmin’s other challenger, Khalid, dropped out of the race, after he was sacked from PKR for defying the party order to resign as Selangor menteri besar.

Nik Nazmi comes from behind

Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad won the Youth chief’s post after spending weeks trailing Amirudin Shari, who was in the lead with a slight majority over Nik Nazmi.

As of last week, unofficial results indicated that Nik Nazmi ( right ) was 40 votes behind Amirudin, but he now has a 250-vote majority after votes from several re-elections conducted, as at the Pensaingan division in Sabah, were taken into account.

In the women’s wing, Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin successfully defended her post as chief from a challenge from her former deputy, Rodziah Ismail, while former vice-chief Haniza Mohamed Talha won the deputy chief’s post.

Rawang assemblyperson Gan Pei Nei was only seven votes short of defending her post as women’s vice-president. Former Selangor state executive councillor Dr Daroyah Alwi and lawyer Sivamalar Genapthy are the wing’s new vice-heads.
