The Malaysian consulate-general in Chennai, Tamil Nadu is in the process of helping 29 Malaysian medical students who are currently stranded in the flood-hit Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

“It is understood that the students went there for a holiday as it’s their semester break.

“We have established contact with them through social media, friends and some, directly. All of them are safe,” said consul-general Chitra Devi Ramiah.

She said the students, comprising 13 women and 16 men, are stranded at two locations, namely Srinagar and Pahalgam.

“We have contacted the police and the minister of external affairs. We are working closely with the relevant departments to help our students exit the place safely,” she told Bernama when contacted yesterday.

Out of the 29 medical students from the southern states, 28 are government-sponsored.
