PAS' beef with beer festivals remains unabated as the Islamic party is now targeting another Oktoberfest event, this time in Malacca.

Malacca PAS ulama chief Zulkifli Ismail Mohamad in a statement today called on the state's Chief Minister Idris Haron to put a stop to the event scheduled on Oct 18 at Jonker Walk, a popular tourist spot in the historic city.

"This is a foreign culture to the people of Malacca.

"This is something negative that will cause the rakyat to fall into alcoholism. Malaccans of various races with a strong Eastern culture must be protected from being damaged," Zulkifli said.

He added that Prophet Muhammad had said alcohol was the source of all evil.

He said Islam does not prevent non-Muslims from consuming alcohol but turning it into a festival purportedly goes against the religion and endangers the rakyat.

Zulkifi's remarks come amid similar criticisms from certain PAS ulama leaders against a three-day Oktoberfest event which began yesterday at 1Utama in Petaling Jaya.

PAS' Temerloh MP Nasrudin Hassan was the first to criticise publicity for the event, prompting calls from several Muslim quarters for the event to be scrapped.

In response, the organisers eventually moved the event to an indoor venue, and at the opening yesterday several PKR and DAP elected representatives turned up to show solidarity .
