PARLIAMENT Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai has insisted that the apron at KL International Airport 2 (KLIA2) is not flooding, stating that it was merely "ponding".

"I would like to explain here that KLIA2 is not experiencing a flood, it is not flooding, just ponding.

"It is not flood, the word you use gives an impression that the whole of KLIA2 is flooded," Liow told Parliament today.

He added that no flight to date have been affected by the ponding.

Liow ( left ) was responding was to Tiong King Sing (BN-Bintulu) who rubbished the authorities claim that all was well with the new airport which started operations in May this year.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), which operates the budget terminal, tweeted pictures of workers removing water, which had collected at the apron, using buckets.

MAHB said that the workers were removing the water so resurfacing work could commence to prevent "further water ponding".

The apron is where the aircraft at an airport are parked.

'Ride with me, minister'

Tiong, who confessed to being a frequent user of KLIA2, said he had personally witnessed "flooding" at the apron.

"I saw it but Malaysia Airports Holdings keeps denying, saying the flooding at the airport apron is not true, that it is a lie.

"The senior operations general manager is lying. He's sleeping daily and doesn't know how to do his job," Tiong ( right ) said.

He said the taxiways of the airport were likewise plagued with problems.

"Minister, if possible, let's go together and try out the taxiway. It's like a disco - dang, dang, dang, dang, dang. This is dangerous," Tiong said.

He warned that the ground underneath the taxiway have become soft, it could possibly cause the tyres of an aircraft to break.

"MAHB has denied these fears, but who will be responsible (when disaster happens)?" Tiong said.

Audit committee to oversee woes

However, Liow reiterated that the problems were "expected" and the Transport Ministry viewed the matter seriously.

"Therefore, I have instructed for a safety audit committee to look into KLIA2 to Liow said.

He added that the committee would be independent as it is not related to MAHB. It would come under the Transport Ministry.

"We will ensure that MAHB takes responsibility to rectify the problems and help resolve the sinking ground," Liow added.
