UMNO AGM Injecting young blood into Umno is not an attempt to seize power from the old guards, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said calls to rejuvenate Umno also means that all party members, regardless of age, are embracing new technologies.

Khairy expressed concern that some might misunderstand that rejuvenating the party was about "wanting more positions or challenging the top leadership".

"Rejuvenating does not necessarily mean in terms of age only," he said in his winding-up speech at the Umno general assembly today.

Citing India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Khairy said although he was the elder candidate in the election which concluded in May, one of the reasons he won was due to his use of social media.

"The younger candidate did not use social media. This means that capturing the imagination of the young people can rejuvenate the party as well.

"Look at our Prime Minister (Najib Abdul Razak). Although he is old, he has millions of followers on social media.

"I am not asking elder leaders to wear tight pants and pink socks. That's not authentic but lunatic," he added, drawing laughter from the delegates.

Emphasising that rejuvenation of the party was not about seizing power, he chided Penang delegate Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said who yesterday said that leaders must be challenged.

"Well, not everyone fights their ‘taukeh’ (boss) like him. The Malay way is to be patient and respect the elders," he said.
