DAP Youth chief Teo Kok Seong is the latest opposition leader to be arrested by police in a crackdown on organisers of the Kita Lawan rally last week.

 

Teo, who reported to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters this morning for his statement to be recorded, was informed that he would be detained.

 

This was confirmed by Dangi Wangi OCPD Zainol Samah in a Whatsapp mesaage.

 

"He was arrested to facilitate investigation under Section 143 (of the Penal Code). Whether he is remanded or not depends on the investigation," he said.

 

Section 143 of the Penal Code states anyone who is a member of an unlawful assembly can be punished with up to six months’ jail or a fine or both.

 

The Kita Lawan rally was aimed at protesting against last month's jailing of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, who is now serving a five-year sentence for sodomy.

The first to fall under the dragnet was PKR Youth leader Saifullah Zulkifli , who was detained immediately after the peaceful rally ended.

PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was detained the following day.

The others hauled in over the rally that saw at least 10,000 march from the Sogo mall to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre are PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli and central leadership council member Fariz Musa .

Another PKR vice-president, Nurul Izzah Anwar, eldest daughter of the incarcerated PKR de facto leader, is also being probed over a similar rally last month, as well as on a separate probe for her speech in Parliament.

'Not questioned yet'

Meanwhile DAP Youth's executive committee slammed the police for the arrest when Teo had gone to the station voluntarily to assist in investigations.

"Till now, Teo has been in detention for nearly four hours and still his statement has not been recorded.

"This isn't normal and looks like they are still awaiting instructions from those at the top," said the committee in a statement this afternoon.

They added such unwarranted delays reflected badly on police efficiency and was lower the force's morale.

"We urge the police to release Teo ( right )  immediately, as he really does not need to be detained and he has not made any serious offence," said the group, reminding the authorities that they are interfering with the duties of a parliamentarian for the ongoing session.

They added they will conduct a candlelight vigil at 9pm tonight outside Jinjang police station to show solidarity with Teo.
