Some 500 supporters gathered for a candlelight vigil outside the Jinjang police station tonight to show solidarity with Lembah Pantai MP and PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, who is being detained in a lock-up there.

They held candles and placards that read, “Free Nurul Izzah”, “Solidarity with Nurul Izzah”, and “Kita Lawan”.

The crowd also chanted slogans such as “Free Nurul”, “Long Live Nurul”, and her moniker, “Puteri Reformasi” (Princess of Reformation).

Among the crowd was Nurul Izzah’s mother and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who arrived at 9.30pm to express her sorrow.

“It is sad that this is being done to my daughter. What did she do wrong? She was just giving voice to the people. This oppression will not last forever. We will be strong and defend the rakyat.

“Tonight it is my daughter... But believe in our strength to fight tyranny to the end,” Wan Azizah said in her speech to the supporters, before leading another round of chanting slogans.

Nurul Izzah’s younger sister Nurul Ilham Anwar also addressed the crowd.

“Let them arrest one Nurul, but they should know this: Four more Nuruls will rise and fight on,” Nurul Ilham said to loud cheers from the crowd.

She added that the detention of her sister has made her realise that sacrifices would have to be made in every struggle.

“The Malaysian government no longer cares, nor respects, its own laws. And these are used at whims by the police to frighten the people,” Nurul Ilham said.

Meanwhile, at a forum at Jalan Maharajalela in Kuala Lumpur, DAP's parliamentary leader and Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang ( right ) said if anyone is to be arrested, it should be the officers who took Nurul Izzah in.

This is because jailed Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's speech, read by his daughter last week, was no ground for the arrest, since it did not touch on the sovereignty of rulers, citizenship, language or the special position of the Malays.

"Whoever arrested her has committed an offence, broken this law on the privileges and powers of Members of Parliament, and should be arrested and prosecuted," Lim told about 50 people present at the forum on Sabah immigration.

The veteran MP said he faced a similar situation in the 1980s, when police came to arrest him for a speech in Parliament.

"I told them to go and refer back to the attorney-general if what they intended to do was within the law, so they never came back," he said.

Back in Jinjang, those attending the vigil outside the police station were entertained with songs that poked fun at Umno, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor.

"I felt how Anwar would have felt when I was sent to the lock-up. We want Nurul Izzah freed immediately," DAP Youth chief and Rasah MP Teo Kok Seong ( right ) said.

Teo was released after a day's remand following his arrest for involvement in the March 7 Kita Lawan rally.

Also present was PAS Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad and anti-rare earths plant Lynas NGO Himpunan Hijau leader Wong Tack.

"We were together against the Lynas issue and now we will once again unite to oppose oppression," Wong thundered.

The vigil-goers dispersed at midnight, after a speech by PKR vice-president Tian Chua, who urged all to attend the gatherings at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in solidarity with Anwar, which are held every Saturday.
