DAP might be taking legal action against police officers for their conduct in arresting over 80 people who took part in an anti-GST gathering at the Customs office in Kelana Jaya last night.

DAP’s Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said that a police report will be lodged over the officers’ treatment of several lawmakers who attended a candlelight vigil for those arrested yesterday night, including arresting two of them.

“We will be lodging a police report today, and later we will pursue legal action,” Ramkarpal said, saying that there are now strong grounds to pursue the case.

“This is assault without justification,” he said.

Earlier, many Pakatan Rakyat MPs condemned the fate suffered by several of their parliamentary colleagues during a candlelight vigil in Kelana Jaya last night protesting the arrest of some 80 anti-GST protesters earlier yesterday.

Two MPs - PSM's Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar and PAS' Kuala Krai MP Dr Hatta Ramli - have been detained at the Shah Alam district police headquarters.

At least three other lawmakers from DAP -  Stampin MP Julian Tan, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim and Klang MP Charles Santiago - were said to have been hurt when members of the light strike force behaved “aggressively” towards the crowd.

Kicked in the ribs

Tan later lodged a police report claiming assault by a plainclothes police officer.

"I identified myself as an MP, but the officer did not acknowledge this[...]he then kicked my ribs, arms and legs," he said in the police report sighted by Malaysiakini .

When contacted, Tan said the crowd had been peaceful and even praised the police before the scuffles broke out.

"What we saw was that the crowd was peaceful, chanting and singing songs. At some point even singing song praising the police for working hard," he said.

"All they want is an answer on what's going to happen to those that (have) been locked-up."
