MCA chief Liow Tiong Lai urged all to give Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak more time to make public the government’s stand on the implementation of hudud.

Najib was supposed to make the announcement soon after BN component parties met on this five days ago, but has thus far been silent.

"I believe BN has already conducted its meeting and it will have a joint statement later. We should just wait for this from the prime minister. Let us give him (the PM) some time.

 

"All BN component parties have expressed their stand on the issue. BN also has its own stand. On this, we are strongly opposed to hudud law," said Liow ( left ).

He told reporters this today after MCA and 31 major Chinese guilds and associations pledged to oppose the implementation of hudud in Malaysia in line with civil laws and the federal constitution.

Their declaration came after a meeting at the MCA headquarters in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the hudud controversy.

The five-point declaration reads:

  • (We) will resolutely defend our democracy as guided by civil laws and the federal constitution which is the basis for the founding and formation of Malaya, and thence Malaysia;

 

  • Agree that the implementation of hudud law in a plural society will eventually erode our democracy and create injustice;

    •  

  • Agree that all laws in Malaysia must treat everybody fairly and justly and defend the interests of all ethnic groups in order to meet the spirit of the rule of law, and equality as provided in the federal constitution;

    •  

  • Fully support the movement of moderation as propelled by our prime minister; and

    •  

  • Fully support MCA’s objections against the implementation of hudud law as hudud law violates the federal constitution and the rights of Malaysians as enshrined in the federal constitution.
