Jailed ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim's five remaining criminal charges will be mentioned at the Sungai Buloh Prison tomorrow morning, said his lawyer today.

Sankara Nair told malaysiakini that he was informed via a letter from the High Court Registrar that the a room in the administration building of the prison would be gazetted as a courtroom for a day to hear the mention.

The letter said the decision to have the mention at Sungai Buloh was made in view of Anwar's back condition and the fact that travel from Sungai Buloh to Kuala Lumpur and back would further aggravate it.

The hearing was postponed two weeks ago on the grounds that Anwar, who was then still admitted at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), was unfit to attend

Anwar still faces five outstanding charges - four counts of sodomy and one corruption. The court will decide tomorrow on when to proceed with the hearings.

Anwar is currently serving a total of 15 years in jail after being convicted on separate charges of corruption and sodomy.

Appeal rejected

Anwar was sacked by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on September 2, 1998, on grounds of immorality and was arrested 18 days later under the Internal Security Act (ISA) after leading mass anti-government protests.

He was then charged with five counts of corruption and five sodomy offences. In April 1999, he was convicted of four counts of corruption and jailed for six years. The Appeals court later rejected his appeal and a further appeal to the Federal court is pending.

In August 2000, Anwar was sentenced to nine years jail after being found guilty of committing sodomy. Both sentences are to run concurrently.

Anwar was sent back to the prison yesterday after undergoing treatment for his slipped disc at the HKL where he had been warded since November 25.
